The Bully Was Left Naked and Bleeding....

The Bully Was Left Naked and Bleeding:  Revenge may be sweet, but does anyone really win??

Recently, an article entitled Vancouver teens face charges after bully beaten, hit with stun gun (Canwest News Service  Published: Friday, November 06, 2009) describes a scene where 4 youths were arrested in connection with a beating of an alleged bully.  The anonymous caller reported that a bully was stripped of his clothes, lying in a fetal position on the ground, bleeding, surrounded by the perpetrators.
There were reactions by some that this bully had finally got what he deserved, that the payback fairy had finally pulled the bully’s time card and it was time to pay up.    Sweet revenge.  Satisfaction.

There may be no denying that there seems to be some kind of righteous vindication for people who have suffered at the hands of a bully, who have been tormented, teased and humiliated, who have felt the sting of rejection or heard the snickering aimed at them, intended to be mean spirited in nature.  People who read such a story MIGHT be tempted to think, “Finally”

However, before any of us say, “Hey, score one for the good guys!”, let’s remember that violence is not solved with more violence.

Who really wins?  Those 16 year old 4 boys are now facing assault charges. Those charges may just follow them for the rest of their lives.  That bully is NOT worth a criminal record.

Where in the past kids were often encouraged to “fight back” and “take control”, that advice in these times can spell the end of a life, or the beginning of some kind of living hell.

Revenge now needs to look different.  Being smarter is revenge.  Being successful is revenge.  Being surrounded by good friends and good people is revenge.  Being known as a trustworthy and dependable person is revenge.  And it is sweet.  Too bad it takes patience to taste that kind of revenge.
